Mexican authorities blocked this Thursday the accounts of several individuals and companies linked to Edgar 'N', alias 'El Limones', who was arrested yesterday, Wednesday, after being identified as the financial operator of a criminal network dedicated to extorting ranchers and merchants in the state of Durango.
According to the Security Cabinet, following the arrest of the presumed leader of the criminal group 'Los Cabreras' and five other members, the Financial Intelligence Unit (UIF) tightened its financial noose by blocking several accounts of people close to 'El Limones' and various companies that showed "irregular financial patterns with apparent resources of illicit origin".
"They had characteristics of shell companies, in addition to being used to simulate payroll payments and carry out luxury vehicle purchase and sale operations, cash payments, and split transfers, with no real economic activity identified," the security coordination body detailed.
This block by the UIF comes after the arrest of the leader of the criminal network in question, identified as a "priority target" by authorities as the plaza boss of a group dedicated to threatening and extorting merchants and ranchers in Durango.
Similarly, law enforcement agents arrested five other people from the same criminal group in different raids, which allowed "to weaken the criminal structure" of the organization.
During the operations, firearms, tactical equipment, and various vehicles were seized.
According to the authorities, all detainees are linked to the crime of extortion, the illegal extraction and sale of hydrocarbons, as well as money laundering.
These actions "constitute a direct blow to extortion networks, in line with the National Strategy against Extortion instructed by the Mexican president, Claudia Sheinbaum," stated the head of the Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection (SSPC), Omar GarcĂa Harfuch, when reporting on the operation against 'Los Cabreras'.
The crime of extortion has increased by 23.1% in Mexico, between September 2024 and November 2025, the first 14 months of President Sheinbaum, the Security Cabinet reported with preliminary figures.
In the same period, 38,700 people have been arrested for high-impact crimes, and 311 tons of drugs, including more than four million fentanyl pills, have been secured.
In addition, 20,169 firearms have been confiscated and 1,760 methamphetamine labs have been dismantled, according to the government report.
