Sheinbaum Announces Joint Response to U.S. Intervention in Venezuela

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum stated on Saturday that leaders from other countries have contacted her government following the U.S. military intervention in Venezuela and announced a joint regional statement, without specifying which nations would participate. 'Other presidents have been reaching out to us, and sooner or later we will see an additional position,' she said. Sheinbaum also addressed the bilateral scenario with the United States after Trump insisted on remarks about drug trafficking and the influence of cartels in Mexico. The president assured that these comments 'are not new' and emphasized that there is 'a very good relationship' in security, with 'communication' and an 'understanding' built in previous meetings. 'Collaboration, coordination, but not subordination,' the Mexican head of state stated. She added that the link with the U.S. 'is maintained through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs,' while new positions are being prepared after contacts with other leaders in the Latin American region. Sheinbaum stressed that the multilateral framework must prevail and cited the United Nations Charter to reiterate that 'we condemn this intervention in Venezuela.' Sheinbaum stated that Mexico has already issued a statement through the Ministry of Foreign Relations (SRE) and reiterated that her government is guided by the constitutional principles of foreign policy, particularly non-intervention and the peaceful settlement of disputes. 'We defend the Estrada Doctrine and what represents the foreign policy of our country, which is established in the Constitution, which is against interventions and in favor of the peaceful resolution of any conflict.' In this sense, she emphasized that 'Article 2 of the United Nations Charter clearly states that there must be no military intervention, but a multilateral solution within the framework of the United Nations.'
