Mandatory Mobile Phone Registration in Mexico

A new Mexican regulation requires all mobile numbers to be registered to their owners by June 2026 to combat cybercrime.

Mandatory Mobile Phone Registration in Mexico

Mexico is implementing mandatory registration of all mobile phone numbers in the name of their owners. This measure, approved by the Federal Telecommunications Commission (CRT) on December 8, 2025, aims to combat crimes such as telephone extortion, SMS fraud, identity theft, phishing, and virtual kidnapping. All new lines must be linked to an official ID starting January 9, 2026. For existing users, registration will become mandatory by June 30, 2026. Failure to comply will result in service suspension, and any unused balance or benefits will be forfeited. The registration process requires an official ID, CURP (personal tax ID), and the phone number. Foreign citizens will need a valid passport. Companies like Telcel and AT&T have already launched online portals for registration. After completing the process, users will be able to verify that their data has not been used to register other numbers. Remember that the registration must be performed by the ID holder themselves.
