Mexico's Commission Confirms UK Ambassador Appointment

The Commission on Political and International Affairs of the Permanent Commission ratified the appointment of Alejandro Gertz Manero as Mexico's ambassador to the United Kingdom. The appearance took place without media access and in the absence of federal lawmakers from the PAN, PRI, and the Labor Party (PT) factions. With 10 votes in favor and one abstention, the First Permanent Commission, chaired by Senator Verónica Camino Farjat, approved the resolution on Thursday. A Morena senator stated that Dr. Alejandro Gertz Manero's career clearly shows he has achieved results in every field he has participated in, and as ambassador to the UK, he will also do great work for Mexico. Gertz Manero has delivered results in all areas where he has participated. In turn, Movimiento Ciudadano's Luis Donaldo Colosio Riojas asserted that the proposed profile for the ambassador 'does not correspond to the diplomatic task that is intended to be entrusted.' During his speech, Senator Alejandro Murat Hinojosa, president of the Foreign Relations Commission, highlighted that 'Mexico requires a profile with solid technical skills, institutional experience, moral authority, and strategic vision for that diplomatic representation; and we are convinced that Gertz Manero meets' those characteristics. Presenting his work plan, he announced he will seek to promote greater economic relations between Mexico and Great Britain. He pointed out that the appointment is proposed in a particularly complex geopolitical context for the international community and when Mexico needs, more than ever, a strategic, professional, and skilled representation. He recognized Gertz Manero's extensive career in public service but 'it is also true that this does not translate into expertise and specific knowledge of the diplomatic function,' so Movimiento Ciudadano is not entirely in agreement with the sense of the resolution and will vote in abstention. The former Attorney General's appearance was held behind closed doors and without the presence of the PAN, PRI, and PT factions, which marked the legislative process prior to his ratification as Mexico's diplomatic representative to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. During his intervention, Alejandro Gertz Manero thanked President Claudia Sheinbaum for the designation and stated that the British government has already granted the 'agrément', an essential requirement to assume the post.
