Mexico's Agriculture Secretary Faces Uncertain Future

The Secretary of Agriculture, Julio Berdegué, is once again facing problems within the government and in the very secretariat he commands. From the outset, he promoted a restructuring to reduce the secretariat's costs, failed to establish a close relationship with President Claudia Sheinbaum, and came into conflict with agricultural production sectors over the reform of the water law. This generated discontent among the peasantry, which Berdegué failed to defuse in time, leading to the intervention of his counterpart in the Government Secretariat, Rosa Icela Rodríguez. This scenario has cast doubt on his continued presence in the federal cabinet. Furthermore, he is once again under scrutiny within the cabinet due to a series of unresolved issues that, once again, put his continuity in question. Since taking office in December 2024, Berdegué has failed to gain a foothold in the offices located in the Santa Cruz Atoyac neighborhood. Sources from the federal administration suggest that the date for this could be in March, a month noted as a possible departure for various figures, not limited to Julio Berdegué, and could lead to a significant reshuffle in the cabinet headed by President Claudia Sheinbaum. In recent weeks, various official sources agree that discontent with him has grown due to the restructuring he is promoting in the secretariat, which, among other things, is causing payment delays, resignations, and dismissals. The restructuring was finally approved despite opposition rejection, but the relationship with these social sectors remains strained, placing him in an uncomfortable position within the cabinet as his dialogue is diminished. To this scenario are also added the deficiencies in addressing the crisis of the stem borer worm, which is already ravaging various states in the country and, furthermore, is causing short circuits and commercial, diplomatic, and phytosanitary problems with the United States amidst negotiations for the renewal of the USMCA. Now, suspicions are once again growing for two reasons.
