PAN backs Tamaulipas governor after injunction cancellation

The National Action Party (PAN) expressed its support for the governor of Tamaulipas, Francisco Javier García Cabeza de Vaca, after the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN) canceled the last injunction that prevented the execution of the arrest warrant against him for organized crime. In an official statement, PAN maintained that the case had already been resolved and questioned the reopening of the file. 'The case for which Francisco Javier García Cabeza de Vaca is accused had already been fully resolved,' the party stated, and added that 'the reopening and reactivation of this issue lacks legal foundation.' On Tuesday, February 24, the five female and four male ministers of the highest court unanimously voted on the project related to the amparo for review 435/2025, which allows the Attorney General's Office (FGR) to execute the arrest warrant against the PAN politician. The FGR opened an investigation folder against García Cabeza de Vaca in January 2021 for alleged crimes of organized crime, operations with resources of illicit origin, and tax fraud. While in office as governor, the politician had constitutional immunity and promoted legal resources to halt the criminal action. After his term ended in 2022, a new arrest warrant was obtained for the first two crimes mentioned. Since late September 2022, the former governor has resided in the United States. In a message released following the SCJN's resolution, the Tamaulipas politician assured that he will continue his legal defense and linked the process against him to complaints he filed in 2019 about alleged fuel theft networks. 'The largest corruption and embezzlement network in the history of Mexico was orchestrated from the National Palace,' he affirmed. In its Thursday statement, National Action Party stated that the case constitutes a political retaliation. It is evident that we are facing political persecution. PAN reiterated that it will continue to denounce what it considers an improper use of institutions against opponents, while the FGR maintains the judicial order authorized by the Judiciary.
