Mexican Business Leaders Call for Trust Restoration

Mexico's Business Coordinating Council believes the government must restore investor confidence. They argue that for this, President Claudia Sheinbaum needs to succeed in her electoral reform in the legislature to show control over the ruling coalition and overcome economic stagnation.

Mexican Business Leaders Call for Trust Restoration

A prominent member of the CCE summarized the situation in recent hours: 'it is difficult to generate trust if one agrees in the Palace but then those agreements are executed by officials appointed by the previous president.' The axis of the reform, which proposes a less costly democracy for the Treasury and would allow savings of up to 10 billion pesos a year, also pleases business leaders, although they do not say so publicly. Gaining political muscle is beginning to be seen in the business world as a shortcut to mitigate the stagnation of an economy that has already gone seven years without being able to generate a consistent expansion of GDP. However, the president was presented with more unfavorable data that already accounted for damage to convenience stores, suspensions of activities in productive plants, losses for airlines due to canceled flights, damage to infrastructure (there were more than 250 blocked roads), and, perhaps the most sensitive intangible effect, the impact on the public investor who demands security for their businesses. A setback that was accompanied by a UBS report stating that there is no certainty regarding a possible renegotiation of the USMCA. Faced with this panorama, the CCE is hinting that the Government must generate trust and that for this, it is key that Sheinbaum imposes her will on the Green and PT parties with her electoral reform proposal. If the president triumphs in the legislature, she will be able to show greater control of the ruling party that today looks compartmentalized and that, precisely for that reason, does not offer the necessary trust for investment. Unlike other business entities, the Business Coordinating Council (CCE), led by José Medina Mora, has shown notable caution in the discussion of the electoral reform promoted by President Claudia Sheinbaum. In the main entity that groups businessmen, there are critical voices of the new institutional format, however, there is also the conviction that the president needs a triumph that confirms her as the head of the ruling party and, at the same time, generates an injection of confidence in the investor environment. The week began complex in various corporations due to the chaos of last Sunday, when the Army killed Nemesio Oceguera Cervantes. On Monday, through discreet channels, businessmen conveyed to the Palace some conclusions from an explosive weekend. The National Chamber of Commerce Confederation reported losses of 2,000 million pesos.
