Alcalde: MORENA in no rush for coalitions before electoral reform approval

Due to the lack of agreements with the Labor Party and the Green Party on the electoral reform of the 4T, Luisa María Alcalde insisted on waiting for the final presentation of the initiative and the decision of the coalition that will form for the 2027 elections. During a radio interview, Alcalde Luján confirmed that in a strategic move aimed at consolidating the obradorist electoral project before defining travel companions, the controversial constitutional reform on electoral matters must be approved. Alcalde emphasized that her party will not make hasty decisions regarding electoral coalitions, prioritizing the legislative debate on the constitutional majority that built Claudia Sheinbaum's presidential candidacy in 2024 as the axis of her immediate political agenda. As she had already assured at the beginning of last month, the MORENA leader confirmed that Sheinbaum Pardo's legislative proposal does not put democracy at risk, as her own allies claim, but seeks to eliminate the privileges of "those who never won a vote." Therefore, she confirmed that the elimination of "unmerited" proportional legislators is not negotiable and will be maintained in the presidential bill, in order to improve proportional representation mechanisms and strengthen popular participation. Sheinbaum postpones the sending of the electoral reform again: "I had some comments, but it is ready." Finally, Luisa María Alcalde expressed confidence that not only her allies in the PT and the Green Party will join Claudia Sheinbaum's proposal, but she also anticipated that members of other benches could give the green light to the presidential reform on electoral matters. This occurs after the governor of Alfonso Durazo, president of the National Council of Morena, confirmed the call for a session of the body to approve the general criteria of its internal process for the definition of its coordinators in 17 states, 300 electoral districts, and the municipalities that will be at stake in the 2027 midterm election.
