Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum held a phone conversation with Brazilian President Luiz InĂ¡cio Lula da Silva on Monday. During the talks, the leaders agreed on a visit by the Mexican leader to the South American country this year.
According to the Brazilian Presidency, the politicians discussed strengthening economic relations between the two nations. In particular, they expressed interest in deepening bilateral ties in the energy sector.
Lula da Silva also invited Sheinbaum to visit Brazil and proposed organizing a business event. It should be attended by private companies from both countries to explore new business opportunities.
"The President of Mexico accepted the invitation, and both sides agreed to define a date for the visit between June and July of this year," the official statement noted.
Brazil and Mexico have the largest economies in Latin America. They have actively developed high-level contacts since Sheinbaum took office in October 2024.
Lula da Silva has been serving as President of Brazil since January 2023, and this year he will run for re-election to secure a fourth term. In April 2025, the leaders met in Tegucigalpa on the sidelines of the IX Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC). Back then, they agreed to strengthen ties between the industries of both countries.
This rapprochement between the two Latin American powers is taking place against the backdrop of the trade war sparked by US President Donald Trump. This trade war has had a serious impact on both Mexico and Brazil.
