Hernández Palacios Elected Head of Superior Audit of the Federation

The Chamber of Deputies elected Aureliano Hernández Palacios as head of the Superior Audit of the Federation (ASF) for the 2026-2034 term. He is the son of Fernando Aureliano Hernández Palacios Mirón, who was the private secretary to Claudia Sheinbaum in the government of Mexico City. Aureliano Hernández Palacios Cardel serves as the Special Auditor of Federalized Expenditure, a position he obtained by appointment from the outgoing auditor, David Colmenares, who did not receive the support of MORENA to seek re-election. He received 472 votes out of 500 possible in the Chamber of Deputies, thus securing the support of all political forces. Elizabeth Barba Villafán (one vote) and Luis Miguel Martínez Anzures (six votes) did not participate in the competition. David Colmenares must hand over the post he has held since 2018, amidst criticism for the inefficiency of the Audit Office and the dismantling of the institution's capabilities, which should play a key role in the fight against corruption and in favor of accountability. El País reported that Colmenares did not have the support of President Claudia Sheinbaum. Hernández Palacios Cardel holds a degree in Economics. Since 2018, he has been part of the Superior Audit of the Federation, where he has served as General Director of Audit of Federalized Expenditure 'D' and, a few months ago, in October 2025, he was appointed Special Auditor of Federalized Expenditure.
