Mexican President Vows Continued Support for Cuba

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum stated that her government will continue to “support the people of Cuba” amidst threats from US President Donald Trump against the island's government. Sheinbaum made these remarks in response to a message posted by her predecessor, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, on social media the previous day, in which he called for support for the Cuban people against the US energy blockade. “We will continue to support the people of Cuba from the government, and whoever wants to support, can support,” the President expressed during an event in the state of Nayarit (northwest), as covered by international media. The head of state also criticized opponents who spoke out against the support given to Cuba: “They said, ‘How is it possible that she came out to speak for a brother people?’ Yesterday, President López Obrador, who is now retired and writing books, wrote something on his social media and said: ‘I feel very pained by what is happening to the Cuban people,’ because the Cuban people have suffered for many years from a blockade imposed by the United States and other countries that prevents products from arriving,” Sheinbaum pointed out at an event in the state of Nayarit. According to a report by the Argentine News Agency this Saturday, former President López Obrador (2018-2024) reappeared on social media with a message in support of Cuba and called for help to the Cuban people by depositing money into a civil association's bank account. During his presidency, López Obrador signed an agreement with Cuba to hire doctors from the island and bring them to the country, and also fulfilled oil shipments, both contractual and humanitarian. On this Sunday, Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel thanked Mexico for its “generous solidarity and support” in response to López Obrador's message. “How could she not speak out for a brother people? Do you know what he is talking about?” “We will never forget your permanent and decisive support in strengthening that cherished friendship,” Díaz-Canel expressed on social media. “It speaks to the greatness of the heart,” he stated.
