Mexico's President Clarifies Cause of Seco River Hydrocarbon Spill

President Claudia Sheinbaum stated the Seco River spill was caused by a company's vessel, not the Dos Bocas refinery. She announced Pemex, Profepa, and Semarnat are cleaning up, and the Prosecutor's Office is investigating the incident as a crime.

President Claudia Sheinbaum Pard clarified that the hydrocarbon spill in the Seco River is not a result of the Dos Bocas refinery, and the water contamination is actually due to a vessel from a company. "It was caused by a vessel from a company that had this spill, and Pemex is helping to clean it up. Profepa and Semarnat are involved, and all necessary resources are being used to assist the fishermen," she stated. From the National Palace, Sheinbaum Pard detailed that the Attorney General's Office of the Republic is already investigating this incident due to water contamination and the death of several species in the area. "Investigations are still underway, and we have also asked the Attorney General to intervene because this is now a criminal case," she clarified. What is Sheinbaum doing about the spill? Furthermore, the head of state made it clear that Pemex is doing everything to clean up the ocean and the beaches in the surrounding area. Sheinbaum also informed that she has asked Pemex director Victor Rodríguez Padilla to go to the spill zone to see the situation and determine if more support is needed. "It is not a Pemex spill, but Pemex is doing everything to clean up the ocean and the beaches, they are working," she said. Meanwhile, President Claudia Sheinbaum indicated that the recent incident at the Dos Bocas refinery may have had some involvement in the spill, "but in any case, it would be minor," she concluded.
