Mexico Introduces 'Cazzu Law' to Protect Children's Rights

A legislative proposal known as the 'Cazzu Law' has emerged in Mexico and was presented to the Congress of Michoacán to limit the power of parents who do not fulfill their responsibilities. The project focuses on the right to mobility of girls, boys, and adolescents. According to the Argentine News Agency, the proposal is based on the personal situation of Cazzu, whose real name is Julieta Cazzuchelli, who publicly exposed her legal conflicts with Christian Nodal, the father of her daughter. The case gained visibility after her statements in a podcast, where she recounted tensions related to travel permits for her daughter, Inti. The legislative proposal states that parental authority should not function as a control tool when there is a breach of duties. The initiative proposes that parents who do not assume their responsibilities cannot intervene in key decisions about their children's lives. Deputy Sandra Arreola Ruiz promoted the project within the Mexican Ecologist Green Party, and the presentation was made on International Women's Day. The legislator stated that the measure seeks to protect childhood and guarantee their rights above conflicts between adults. The project contemplates a reform of Article 4 of the Mexican Constitution, and the modification proposes to prioritize the best interest of the child as a guiding principle. It also proposes to prevent defaulting parents from blocking procedures such as passports or travel authorizations. The proposal includes the creation of agile mechanisms so that the parent in charge can authorize mobility without depending on the consent of the one who fails in their obligations. The central objective is to avoid blocking situations that affect the daily lives of minors. The case that motivated the initiative is linked to disputes over travel permits. Cazzu pointed out difficulties in traveling with her daughter for work commitments and described episodes of tension with Christian Nodal's legal environment during mediation processes. In turn, Christian Nodal's legal team rejected the accusations, and lawyers stated that the musician did not refuse to grant travel permits and noted that these processes require agreements between both parties. The defense also emphasized the confidential nature of the mediations. The 'Cazzu Law' has been installed in the public debate as a project that links the judicial sphere with a broader social problem. The initiative proposes a change in the way of understanding parental responsibility and seeks to guarantee basic rights of childhood.
