Sheinbaum Confirms Beaches Clean After Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum provided an update on the Gulf of Mexico oil spill investigation, stated beaches are clean, and shared her prediction for the Mexico-Portugal match.


President Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed that an investigation and containment process for the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico has begun. 'There is a cleanup process underway, and we are working with fishermen and those affected to repair the damage,' the head of state explained. The president also stated that the Secretariat of the Navy (Semar) is investigating which vessel caused the spill. 'There is an investigation and containment process underway in Cantarell,' she added. Sheinbaum also addressed the topic of the Mexico-Portugal football match, which will take place at the new Banorte Stadium. 'The Mexican National Team has to win,' the president stated, expressing her regret that Cristiano Ronaldo will not be in Mexico for the game. In response to questions about the spill in the gulf, Sheinbaum said that the beaches are now clean and there is no major risk. 'At this moment, the beaches are clean because they were cleaned,' she emphasized. During her morning press conference, Sheinbaum also touched on other topics, including electoral reform, her meeting with FIFA President Gianni Infantino, the inflation situation, and a program for renewing heavy-duty vehicles. Additionally, she commented on the case of missing persons, reporting that the official figure for missing people in Mexico is 132,534. Since October 2024, 31,946 missing persons have been located.
