Mexico is the country with the highest number of urgent actions enforced disappearances worldwide, according to the latest UN report. In a five-month period, from September 2025 to February 2026, 40 new urgent actions were issued against Mexico, accounting for 37% of all new global cases during that period. The total number of accumulated urgent actions against Mexico has reached 819. The report from the organization IDHEAS highlights that the mechanism, originally designed as an exceptional humanitarian measure, has become a recurrent tool in Mexico's case, indicating persistent and structural failures in national search and investigation systems. The UN Committee on Enforced Disappearances noted serious shortcomings in the processes of search and justice, despite the Mexican state providing detailed responses within the established deadlines. 18% of the victims are minors, 3% are elderly people, and 3% are relatives searching for their loved ones. The state of Chiapas leads the country with 30% of the cases, mainly linked to mass disappearances of migrants. In Jalisco (18% of cases) and Guanajuato (12%), cases were reported with the alleged direct participation of state agents. The UN Committee points to critical delays in obtaining essential evidence, such as surveillance camera recordings and phone records, as well as limitations in the collection, registration, and cross-referencing of genetic data of the disappeared and their relatives. The document also reports cases where officials conducting investigations obstruct the processes, refuse to accept complaints, or urge relatives to stop searching, with no consequences for them.
