Mexican Transporters Call for Strike Amid Rising Crime

David Estévez, leader of transporters, confirmed a general strike for April 6th. The reasons are constant extortion, road homicides, and inaction from authorities, despite ongoing dialogue. Protests could disrupt the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

David Estévez, leader of transporters, confirmed that there will indeed be a strike on Monday, April 6th. In a radio interview, he explained that there is dialogue with the authorities, but there have been no results. "Unfortunately, I believe we are going on strike, we are going on strike by 90 percent on Monday," he stated. Estévez acknowledged that there have been dialogue tables, but without results because every day they see insecurity, extortion, and very little attention to transporters on the roads. "The dialogue is open, but what good does it do me to dialogue if there are no results, for both the transport sector and the peasant sector," the leader affirmed. It was at the end of March when transporters called for a new strike after Holy Week, to 'give a chance' to national and foreign vacationers. The National Association of Transporters (ANTAC) called for demonstrations and road blockades in April, denouncing the lack of measures against disappearances, extortions, and homicides on roads, as well as the increase in gasoline prices. At that time, Estévez thanked some officials from the Ministry of the Interior (Segob) for their work as interlocutors in the working tables. But he added that there are no clear conditions to resolve their demands and address the situations of insecurity on the roads. Is the 2026 World Cup in danger? On March 31, Segob informed that permanent attention mechanisms have been established, in order to guarantee dialogue and the presentation of solutions to the demands of transporters. They assured that some demands of the transporters have already been addressed, while others are in process, according to the corresponding administrative and operational times. Therefore, they considered that there are no reasons for transporters and field workers to manifest after Holy Week 2026.
