Mexico Lawmakers Clash Over Copyright Reform

Mexico's PT party accuses the Culture Commission of betraying national artists to the interests of multinational music giants. Politicians claim pre-agreed protections for creators were removed from a bill they now deem regressive.

Mexico Lawmakers Clash Over Copyright Reform

The parliamentary coordination of the PT in the Chamber of Deputies has announced a new clash with Morena, denouncing that the Culture Commission, chaired by the Morena member Alma Lidia de la Vega Sánchez, has ceded to the multi-billion dollar interests of multinational music corporations and betrayed national artists, creators, and performers. At a press conference, the PT coordinator, Reginaldo Sandoval, and vice-coordinator, Magdalena Núñez, stated that despite prior agreements to include benefits for national creators in reforms to the Federal Copyright Law and the Federal Labor Law, the commission and its president removed these agreements from the bill. «We demand that the president of the Culture Commission revert to what our creators have proposed,» said Magdalena Núñez. She recalled that the bill was sent to the chamber's board for debate and voting by all 500 legislators last week, but its discussion was halted due to disagreements and protests from the PT, as they believe the reform is regressive and does not align with President Claudia Sheinbaum's proposals. «They informed us that the proposals that had been consensus with the guild will not move forward, and that alarms us,» said Sandoval. The coordinator also demanded to be heard at the Secretariat of Culture.
