Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed on Friday during her usual press conference that she will travel to Barcelona next week to participate in a summit with international leaders from the region. This summit, scheduled for April 18, was initially convened by former Chilean President Gabriel Boric and will bring together key figures in Latin American politics. The meeting takes place at a critical moment for Mexico's international relations, as all participants have expressed strong opposition to the war led by the United States and Israel in Iran and the Gaza Strip. The summit will also be attended by Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, Colombian President Gustavo Petro, Uruguayan President Yamandú Orsi, and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez. Additionally, the governor of Argentina's Buenos Aires Province, Axel Kicillof, will travel to Barcelona, seeking to lead the local progressive movement to defeat Javier Milei in the 2027 local elections. This gathering represents a distancing from the administration of Donald Trump, a key economic partner for Mexico. Relations between Mexico and Spain have been strained since former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador demanded that the Spanish Crown apologize for the conquest of America. Since then, the President of the Community of Madrid and leader of the People's Party, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, has become one of the most prominent critics of the 'Fourth Transformation' (4T) internationally, denouncing alleged links between the movement and organized crime.
