High-Ranking Officials Excluded from Electoral Institute Advisory Competition

Mexico's National Electoral Institute published the list of 100 candidates for three vacant advisory positions. Notable figures like Flavio Cienfuegos and María del Carmen Alanis are absent, while others, despite criticism, advanced to the next round.

Two high-ranking officials have been excluded from the competition for three vacant positions at the National Electoral Institute (INE). Flavio Cienfuegos Valencia, former head of the office of INE president Guadalupe Taddei Zavala, and María del Carmen Alanis Figueroa, former president of the Superior Chamber of the Federal Electoral Tribunal (TEPJF), were not on the list of 100 candidates deemed suitable for the advisory positions. The Technical Evaluation Committee published the list of aspirants, 14 of whom belong to vulnerable groups. The list also highlighted the absence of other prominent figures, such as Pedro Pablo Chirinos, head of the Technical Unit for Liaison with Local Public Bodies of the INE. In contrast, Arturo Manuel Chávez López, head of Talleres Gráficos de México, who scored the highest on the knowledge exam despite his lack of electoral experience, also advanced to the next stage. The list also included several high-level INE officials close to its president. Among them are Roberto Carlos Félix López, acting director of the Executive Directorate of Electoral Organization, who identifies as part of the LGBTTTIQ+ community, and others. The competition evaluated candidates based on three criteria: experience (40%), statement of purpose (30%), and essay (30%).
