Mexico Begins Evaluation of Fracking

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has officially initiated the technical evaluation stage for fracking to extract gas. She emphasized that the goal is not just lower prices, but ensuring energy availability. Under the premise that energy sovereignty is a national priority, the government has assembled a group of specialists from institutions like UNAM and IPN to assess the feasibility of fracking and identify potential regions for its development. This decision, which contrasts with the anti-fracking stance of former president Andrés Manuel López Obrador, has sparked a fierce debate. Environmental organizations like Greenpeace warn that there is no sustainable way to extract unconventional gas and highlight risks to health, the climate, and water. Sheinbaum assured that all concerns will be addressed and that consultations with communities and all interested parties will be held.
