In Nuevo León, the possibility of issuing driver's licenses for free to those who apply for the first time is being considered. The proposal has been presented by Claudia Chapa Marmolejo, a legislator from the Green Ecologist Party of Mexico, and aims to reform the Law Regulating the Issuance of Driving Licenses in the State. This initiative would apply to both private vehicle drivers and public transportation drivers, such as taxis, digital platform transportation, or buses.
According to Chapa Marmolejo, the idea is to grant the driver's license for free to those who request it for the first time, considering that the validity of these licenses is currently three years. The measure aims to benefit users and facilitate access to the official document while potentially fostering job creation in the transportation sector, both public and private.
To access this free license, applicants must meet the usual requirements for obtaining it, such as completing the driving course and exam, presenting a liability letter if underage, and, if for work purposes, fulfilling the requirements of the Mobility Institute in the entity. Chapa Marmolejo emphasized that despite the free process, it is essential to meet all the necessary requirements to obtain the license.
Additionally, this measure seeks to encourage more people to obtain the special license to drive public transport vehicles by reducing the costs associated with the process and necessary training. All of this would help alleviate the shortage of drivers for the new transportation units in the region. The legislator stressed that this action can benefit citizens, especially at a time when many families have faced economic difficulties due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
To apply for a driver's license in Nuevo León, you must be over 18 years old, obtain municipal authorization (Traffic) for the process, and appear at the Vehicle Control Institute with a valid official identification that contains the holder's photo and signature.
