The coordinator of Morena in the Chamber of Deputies, Ricardo Monreal, expressed his concern at a press conference regarding the positions of the president of the Supreme Court of Justice, Norma Piña, which he considers to be uncompromising, illegal, and unconstitutional. Monreal clarified that they will not request political trials against the judges who have issued suspensions against the reform to the Judiciary, despite considering them as 'crazy, illegal, and arbitrary suspensions.'
Norma Piña's call not to politicize justice and to respect the law was rebutted by Monreal, who accused her of being part of the problem, claiming that the Court is exceeding its powers and confronting the Legislative Branch. Despite the ruling of Judge Nancy Juárez Salas against the reform to the Judiciary, Ricardo Monreal explained that they will not promote actions for a political trial against her, opting instead to continue with the reform process and the election of future ministers, judges, and magistrates prudently.
Monreal insisted on the importance of acting sensibly in the face of judicial decisions he considers inappropriate, and although he acknowledges the possibility of subjecting judges who violate the Constitution to a political trial, they are not considering doing so at this time. The coordinator of Morena emphasized that the president of the Republic is not obliged to comply with resolutions that contradict the Constitution and the laws.
Norma Piña, president minister of the Supreme Court of Justice, at an event at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), mentioned the importance of protecting human rights and being a counterbalance to power through the work of the Judiciary. In response to her statements, Ricardo Monreal accused the minister of violating the law by considering that human rights are not at risk due to the judicial reform, and emphasized the need to maintain control over power to protect them.
Piña Hernández also warned about the difficult moments that constitutional democracy is currently going through and underscored the importance of avoiding confrontations with the Court, highlighting that it is encroaching upon the powers of the legislative branch. In this context, the positions of the involved actors continue to generate debate surrounding the judicial reform and the balance of powers in Mexico.
