Mexico Faces Challenges in Civic Education and Security

President Claudia Sheinbaum must focus efforts on improving civic and ethical education to strengthen citizenship among young people, addressing insecurity and inequality.

Mexico Faces Challenges in Civic Education and Security

Instead of taking the data and adjusting the curricula to strengthen the civic and ethical education of Mexican children, it was decided to stop evaluating this subject and no longer participate in Civica. Education in these areas is essential for building citizenship, and the results of the deficiencies are reflected in the INEGI National Urban Security Survey, which shows perceptions of public safety in urban areas.

"It is essential to have more data to improve the civic education of Mexican children and to guide educational and security policies for the coming years," pointed out President Claudia Sheinbaum. Unfortunately, only six out of ten evaluated students were familiar with civic and citizenship concepts.

Education and security are two crucial topics for the new president of Mexico's agenda. Economic inequality, lack of opportunities, and educational infrastructure must be addressed so that students can be agents of change and transform the perception of insecurity in their communities.

In 2016, the International Study of Civic and Citizenship Education (Civica) was last applied to secondary school students, evaluating their willingness to commit and civic attitudes. Although civic education is important, it is also necessary to work on improving the school climate, as insecurity prevails due to harassment and bullying.

It is necessary to delineate the challenges and propose concrete public policies to improve coexistence and security in Mexico. The survey revealed that eight out of 100 households suffered domestic violence, with minors involved in a third of these cases, indicating fractures in the social fabric.

Coexistence is an evident problem, as seven out of ten people have had confrontations with their neighbors. It is crucial to have accurate information to address these needs in education and security and find points of convergence between both areas.
