The full Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN) approved its budget project for 2025 after three days of debate. This budget includes resources amounting to 5,922 million pesos and includes a reduction in the salaries of 330 senior officials, including the 11 justices.
The justices took this measure after receiving strong criticism from the presidency of the Republic to ensure their earnings were lower than those of Claudia Sheinbaum. They stated that this cut is made "to comply with the provisions of the Seventh Transitional Article of the Judicial Reform Decree."
In a statement, the Supreme Court detailed that this reduction represents a 1.4% decrease in real terms compared to what was authorized for the current year by the Chamber of Deputies. They also mentioned that the amount is 23.7% lower, in real terms, than what was authorized seven years ago for the 2018 fiscal year.
The Court recalled that in 2024, the Chamber of Deputies made the largest cut in the last ten years to the resources requested by the Supreme Court, equivalent to 321.9 million pesos, representing a reduction of 5.3% from the original request.
To prepare this budget project, the SCJN considered the current organizational configuration of the Court and its operational needs. However, they noted that it will be subject to regulatory and secondary legislation, which could imply adjustments during the next fiscal year.
It is important to take into account that in August 2025, the full High Court will be renewed, which will consist of nine justices instead of the current eleven.
