President Claudia Sheinbaum asked Televisa and Tv Azteca, the two main television networks in Mexico, to clarify the scandals of alleged corruption in the United States that have implicated their top executives during her morning conference in Baja California Sur. A journalist asked her about the controversies that arose this week regarding the television networks that have a presence in several American countries.
Specifically, Emilio Azcárraga Jean, CEO of Grupo Televisa, requested a license while a U.S. Department of Justice investigation related to FIFA is ongoing. The case involves alleged bribes to FIFA executives to secure broadcasting rights for several World Cups.
The president did not address this particular case, but mentioned the controversy regarding Tv Azteca with U.S. investment funds that have initiated arbitration against the Mexican state under the T-MEC at the ICSID. The funds Cyrus Capital Partners and Contrarian Capital Management accuse the Judiciary Power of Mexico of favoring the owner, the controversial tycoon Ricardo Salinas Pliego, to avoid the payment of a 400 million dollar debt issued in 2017 and unpaid in 2021.
Sheinbaum attributed responsibility to the Judiciary Power in this case, even though the lawsuit is directed at the Mexican state. She stated that the specific lawsuit is directed at the Supreme Court due to its resolutions or for having granted amparos.
