The Chamber of Deputies received from the Senate the draft decree project to amend Article 107 and add a fifth paragraph to Article 105 of the Political Constitution regarding the challengability of reforms to the Magna Carta. The president of the Board of Directors, Sergio García Luna, indicated that he instructed it to be immediately referred to the Commission on Constitutional Points.
Deputy Ricardo Monreal Ávila, president of the Political Coordination Board (Jucopo), mentioned that the discussion of the draft is expected to take place between Tuesday and Thursday of next week in the Plenary of the Chamber of Deputies. He emphasized that procedures will not be shortened and that a broad and respectful discussion will be ensured.
In a session that lasted until the early morning, the Senate approved an initiative that prevents the Judicial Branch from invalidating and granting injunctions to stop constitutional reforms, with 85 votes in favor, 21 against, and 2 absences. The reform aims to protect changes to the Magna Carta, establishing that controversies or actions of unconstitutionality related to additions or reforms to the Constitution are inadmissible.
If approved by the Chamber of Deputies, the initiative will amend Articles 105 and 107 of the Constitution. These reforms arose after the Supreme Court agreed to analyze controversies and suspensions issued by judges against the reform of the Judicial Branch, which aims to implement popular elections for the country’s judges starting in 2025.
