In Angamacutiro, Michoacán, a group of alleged hitmen has shot dead Lizbeth Estela Romero Tafolla, the director of Public Security of this municipality. The attack took place around 07:00 local time on Monday when the police official was leaving her home on Nicolás Bravo street in the Centro neighborhood of Angamacutiro, a municipality close to Guanajuato. Initial reports from the State Attorney General's Office indicate that Romero Tafolla was attacked with assault rifles by at least four men, who escaped in a vehicle.
Agents of the Mexican Army, the National Guard, and the Civil Guard are deployed in the area between Michoacán and Jalisco in search of those responsible for the crime. This border area has identified the presence of different drug trafficking groups such as CJNG, Los Viagras, Los Caballeros Templarios, and the Santa Rosa de Lima Cartel, the latter based in Guanajuato.
Lizeth Estela Romero had assumed the direction of Public Security of Angamacutiro only in September. This municipality is governed by Hermes Arnulfo Pacheco Bribiesca, who belongs to Morena, the same party as President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo.
On the other hand, during the same morning on Monday, Aurelio Santos Contreras, former mayor of the municipality of Cotija, Michoacán, which borders Jalisco, was also murdered at the hands of alleged hitmen. Santos Contreras had governed Cotija from 2018 to 2021 under the banner of Morena, but last June he lost the mayoralty representing the PRD.
