Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum accused the ministers of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation of seeking to resign early to secure generous pensions before the election process for new judges of the Judiciary takes place. In an interview, Minister Juan Luis González Alcántara revealed that some ministers will present their resignation, including Norma Piña, Alberto Pérez Dayán, Alfredo Gutiérrez, and others.
Sheinbaum criticized the ministers' actions, indicating that they are carrying out unconstitutional reviews of the amparos filed by opposition political parties. She also mentioned that she will wait to see how they vote regarding the project proposed by González Alcántara Carrancá, which seeks to eliminate the popular election of judges and magistrates in the reform of the Judiciary.
González Alcántara stated that the Court does not have the authority to reverse a constitutional reform that has followed all required procedures. He criticized the ministers for acting against the Constitution and assured that those who vote against it will go down in history for it. The resignation of the seven ministers is expected to take effect before 2025, including Norma Piña, Juan Luis González Alcántara, Alberto Pérez Dayán, Alfredo Gutiérrez, Jorge Pardo, Javier Laynez, and Margarita Ríos.
Sheinbaum accused the ministers of seeking to secure their million-dollar pensions and abandoning their posts before facing legal consequences for their actions. In this regard, she expressed that the ministers will be judged both by history and by the Mexican people.
