Marko Cortés Discusses Mexico-Spain Relations

The president of the National Action Party (PAN) of Mexico, Marko Cortés, met with Spanish senator Juan Matarí Sáez, president of the Ibero-American Affairs Commission of the Spanish Senate. In this meeting, Cortés emphasized the need to strengthen relations between the legislators of both parties to face the challenges that both countries encounter, especially on issues such as militarization, authoritarianism, and the destruction of democracy in Mexico.

In this context, the PAN leader commented on the urgency of informing the international community about the situation in Mexico under an authoritarian government and the importance of stopping its advance. These statements were made a day before a reform called 'constitutional supremacy' is debated in the Mexican Congress, which has been harshly criticized by the opposition for its authoritarian nature as it limits the functions of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation.

Subsequently, Cortés also held talks with the president of the Spanish Popular Party, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, to address issues related to the defense of democracy and the fight against populism in both nations. In this regard, he highlighted the importance of cooperation between Mexico and Spain beyond ideological differences.

On another note, the PAN president requested a three-day leave from the Senate, being replaced by his substitute Omar Francisco Gudiño Magaña. This request was made during his visit to Madrid, Spain, where he met with leaders of the Popular Party and underscored the relevance of the bilateral relationship in terms of trade, culture, and history between the two nations.
