Supreme Court Minister Declines Candidacy for 2025 Elections

Minister Juan Luis González Alcántara Carrancá has decided to withdraw his candidacy for the extraordinary elections of 2025, as he announced during his participation at the National Autonomous University of Mexico, where he discussed his proposal for judicial reform. The reform in question was enacted on September 15 and is now at the center of attention of the Plenary of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation.

In a private session, the 11 ministers of the SCJN agreed to analyze the draft ruling of Minister Juan Luis González Alcántara Carrancá next Tuesday, November 5. This draft suggests partially invalidating the judicial reform, following constitutional actions presented by various political parties and legislators.

In his arguments, the Minister proposes to validate several articles of the reform but invalidate those related to the election of judges and magistrates through popular vote, advocating for judicial autonomy and independence. This proposal has generated intense debate in the Plenary of the Court.

Additionally, other resignations have been added to González Alcántara's resignation, including that of Minister Jorge Mario Pardo Rebolledo and Alfredo Gutiérrez Ortiz Mena. These resignations are scheduled for August 31 of next year and reflect the complexity of the current judicial scenario.

In his intervention, González Alcántara defended his draft ruling and argued against the proposed judicial reform, pointing out the negative consequences it could have for the republic. He emphasized the importance of preserving constitutional stability and judicial independence, fundamental aspects for the proper functioning of the legal system in the country.
