The minister of the Supreme Court of Justice of Mexico, Juan Luis González Alcántara Carrancá, warned about the possibility that the government of Claudia Sheinbaum would not comply with the resolution of the ministers of the SCJN and decide not to invalidate the reform to the Judiciary. González Alcántara mentioned in an interview that it is expected that on November 5, the ministers will discuss and approve their project to invalidate the judicial reform, but there is a risk that the Executive and Legislative powers will not comply and ignore it.
In the event that this situation materializes, the minister mentioned that the decision to elect judges and magistrates by popular vote would have repercussions on the Mexican economy. He emphasized that suddenly altering the way judges and magistrates are elected would impact the economic sphere. In this context, Alcántara Carrancá stressed that the ministers have the right to analyze the constitutionality of the judicial reform and determine its validity, respecting freedom of expression.
Regarding the criticism for participating in demonstrations against the reform, the minister explained that he joined the protests after former president Andrés Manuel López Obrador challenged the members of the Supreme Court to take to the streets to defend the Judiciary. Regarding his possible resignation from the Court, he mentioned that he is evaluating whether he will present it in the coming hours.
Alcántara Carrancá admitted that the members of the court receive considerable pensions, although he noted that these are insignificant compared to other compensations, such as those of the director of the Bank of Mexico or the expenses to maintain a single person in Palacio Nacional.
