On Wednesday, October 30, José Ramón Cossío, in a radio interview, spoke about the position of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN) regarding a possible partial invalidation of the judicial reform and its implications for President Claudia Sheinbaum. He explained that if the Court votes in favor of this invalidation and the president does not comply with the resolution, the ministers could remove her from office and bring her to trial, along with other officials who do not comply with the Court's provisions.
According to Cossío, based on section 16 of Article 107 of the Constitution, the removal and judicial process of those who do not comply with the Court's ruling could be considered, including the Executive and Legislative branches. It was detailed that in this particular case, the removal of Sheinbaum would not be subjected to a vote in the Congress of the Union, as historically the Supreme Court does not consider this step necessary.
In the event of reaching this scenario, deputies and senators could initiate a political trial against the ministers who voted in favor of removing Sheinbaum. The Supreme Court determined that the project of judgment by Minister Juan Luis Alcántara Carrancá will be discussed next Tuesday, November 5. In response to these statements, Sheinbaum replied in her morning conference, appearing calm and assuring that there are positive messages amid the uncertainty.
Sheinbaum referred to a recent photo of the Popocatépetl volcano, which emitted a plume in the shape of a heart, which she interpreted as a positive message. In light of Cossío's warnings of removal, the president remained calm and stated that the point of discussing a hypothetical coup against her has been reached.
