President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo stated that an investigation will be requested regarding reports indicating that stray dogs and cats are being sacrificed at the Felipe Ángeles International Airport (AIFA) when they cross the runways. When informed about this case, Sheinbaum expressed her commitment to investigate the situation, as her administration prioritizes the protection of animals.
During a morning conference at the National Palace, a journalist raised concerns that these animals are being sacrificed and proposed exploring the possibility of relocating them to a shelter or implementing an alternative measure to euthanasia. She also announced that this year the approval of a constitutional reform in favor of animal protection is expected, and she will check with the Chamber of Deputies on the progress of its discussion and approval.
The mentioned reform was presented and rejected during the previous administration, led by former president Andrés Manuel López Obrador. Sheinbaum emphasized her position as an animal advocate and recalled the importance of the previously proposed constitutional reform, stressing the need for associated secondary legislation.
"There are always different opinions, but I advocate for the protection of animals, sentient beings," Sheinbaum declared when questioned about other forms of animal cruelty such as bullfighting. She emphasized her personal commitment to the protection of animals.
