Claudia Sheinbaum: Democratic or Authoritarian?

The analysis of Claudia Sheinbaum reveals an apparent contradiction between her democratic image and her authoritarian actions. As her term progresses, questions arise about the true nature of her leadership. Could her interpretation of democracy serve the ambitions of a dominant party?

Claudia Sheinbaum: Democratic or Authoritarian?

Claudia Sheinbaum has been described as a loyal subordinate of her predecessor. Like him, Sheinbaum has been noted for adopting some authoritarian tactics disguised as democratic while in opposition. Her attachment to certain ideologies has been a source of controversy, as she has been accused of sympathizing with guerrilla movements like the M-19 in Colombia in the past.

During a visit by President Carlos Salinas de Gortari to a demonstration in which Sheinbaum participated, a banner demanding democracy and fair trade was displayed, which ironically would be fulfilled later. Over the years, Sheinbaum has demonstrated a firm leftist ideological stance, leading her to implement changes in electoral institutions to ensure greater autonomy and credibility.

Throughout her career, Sheinbaum has sought to consolidate her political position through votes and, at times, through decisions that have generated controversy. The perception of some critics is that, despite her democratic discourse, her government tends to reinforce a system dominated by a hegemonic party, with weak political opposition.

At various points in her academic and political career, Sheinbaum has sparked controversy for her stances and actions, generating mixed opinions about her commitment to democracy and the plurality of opinions. Despite this, Sheinbaum has managed to establish strategic alliances that have allowed her to consolidate her political power.

In the current political context, it is evident that Sheinbaum continues to play an important role on the national scene, aligned with Andrés Manuel López Obrador and other key political actors. Her leadership style has been questioned by some sectors of society, but she has also received support from those who value her firmness and determination in decision-making.
