United Deliverers of Mexico (RUM), an organization that brings together more than 2,000 deliverers, has requested the Ministry of Labor and Social Welfare to open a dialogue about social security and labor rights for deliverers and drivers. RUM works in collaboration with other organizations such as NiUnRepartidorMenos (NURM), NiUnaRepartidoraMenos (NURMA), and Free and Independent Deliverers and Drivers (RCL), united in the fight to improve labor conditions and social security.
The organizations call on the authorities to establish an inclusive dialogue space, where all voices are heard and the needs of those who depend on the collaborative economy to generate income are recognized. The necessity of clear mechanisms for disconnection and protection against gender-based violence is raised, aiming to improve labor conditions in the sector.
RUM is based on principles of independence, freedom, and horizontality, opposing labor subordination and seeking a regulatory model that respects the autonomy of its members. A transitional regime has been proposed for the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) to implement a mandatory pilot for companies, so that workers can maintain flexibility in their schedules and the possibility of choosing the platforms they want to work for, while guaranteeing essential labor rights.
Digital platforms provide independence and flexibility for deliverers and drivers to generate income, and more than 90% of them positively value the current model. The recent reform to the Federal Labor Law has incorporated a new chapter to regulate platform work and address these issues.
The request for dialogue with the Ministry of Labor arises after the mobilization of more than 1,000 deliverers in the #DecalogueRide on October 14, where the #DecalogueOfDelivering was presented to Marath Bolaños, Secretary of Labor. According to a study by Buendía and Márquez, around 2.5 million people generate income through digital platforms, and the vast majority achieve income comparable to or exceeding a monthly minimum wage, indicating that many depend on this activity as their main source of income.
