The Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection, Omar García Harfuch, met with federal deputies in a private meeting where he assured that crime in the country is 'controlled' and that violence has not spiraled out of control, according to Ricardo Monreal, leader of Morena in the Chamber of Deputies.
Monreal conveyed that García Harfuch expressed confidence in recovering peace and tranquility in the country through a new strategy, which was detailed during a three-hour meeting at the Legislative Palace of San Lázaro. The strategy involves addressing the root causes of violence, a broader inter-institutional coordination with the states, and strengthening intelligence efforts.
The secretary highlighted that he understands the causes of violence in states like Guerrero, Michoacán, Chiapas, and Querétaro, but did not disclose them for national security reasons and emphasized the need to reinforce coordination with local and state authorities related to security.
The official's willingness to deliver results aimed at pacifying the country was emphasized, for which the powers of the secretariat will be expanded and the national intelligence system will be strengthened.
The deputies, for their part, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to dialogue with the secretary and pointed out the importance of governors reinforcing security in their entities. Budgetary issues and specific cases that were kept confidential were discussed.
The coordinator of the PAN, Noemí Luna, acknowledged the official's willingness for dialogue, although she requested that he appear before the full chamber of 500 deputies to explain in detail his strategy to restore peace to the country.
