Mexican democracy gave rise to new institutions and autonomous bodies that acted as a counterbalance to political power in matters of human rights, transparency, and access to information. However, it has always faced challenges to its stability. In 1997, genuine elections emerged, leading to a Chamber of Deputies without an official majority, laying the foundations for a young constitutional democracy.
Unfortunately, on November 5, 2024, constitutional democracy in Mexico came to an end, giving way to a hybrid regime with unequal elections and arbitrary power without checks and balances. Despite this, millions of democratic citizens remain active, and Mexican society retains its diversity that does not conform to a single party.
The beginning of democracy in Mexico was the result of a complex process that included libertarian demands from 1968 and political reforms in the 1970s. Progress was made towards a system with free elections, alternations in government, and separation of powers. However, the transformation into a hybrid regime has meant a setback in the independence of powers, with consequences for democracy in the country.
The death of constitutional democracy is largely attributed to manipulations that undermined the separation of powers, affecting the independence of the Judiciary and the actions of autonomous bodies. Despite attempts to maintain democratization, the legitimacy crisis of the regime persists, especially with the lack of focus on social issues such as inequality and poverty.
The importance of not abandoning the struggle for a solid and representative democracy is emphasized, despite current challenges. The deterioration of constitutional democracy in Mexico is perceived as a planned crime that affects the political system and the quality of life of citizens.
