New National Energy Plan 2024-2030

Luz Elena González Escobar, head of the Secretariat of Energy (Sener), presented the main objective of the National Energy Plan 2024-2030 during the Morning Briefing of President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo. In the conference, it was pointed out that during the neoliberal period, Pemex became the most indebted oil company in the world.

In the current government of López Obrador, an energy sector policy focused on self-sufficiency, sovereignty, and energy security was implemented. They managed to stabilize oil production at 1.8 million barrels per day, increase proven reserves by 22.7% from 2018 to 2024, rehabilitate six refineries, build the Dos Bocas Refinery, acquire the Deep Park refinery, and rescue fertilizer plants.

Another mentioned achievement was the constitutional change, through a presidential decree signed by Claudia Sheinbaum, to return PEMEX to the people. Among the actions of the Energy Plan 2024-2030, it is highlighted that the State will exercise leadership over the sector to ensure a sufficient and reliable supply for Mexicans and their productive sectors.

In addition, national consumption will be prioritized over export, national production of petrochemicals will be increased, oil refining will be consolidated, storage policy will be strengthened, and the price of energy will be kept stable in real terms during the six-year term. The price of gasoline and diesel will not be allowed to rise above inflation, and mixed projects will be promoted in different sectors. Pemex will operate as a public company that will supply fuels at prices considered fair.
