The mayor of La Magdalena Contreras, Fernando Mercado, led a popular consultation last weekend, where residents of the San Nicolás Totolapan neighborhood voted to decide the use of a building constructed in Deportivo 1 de Mayo by the previous administration.
More than 300 neighbors participated in the process to determine the future use of this building. During the event, four final options were proposed and voted on, which will be submitted to a local vote on December 7. These options include multiple uses, a gym, a space for martial arts, and an area for health and sports regeneration.
The building constructed by the previous administration was intended for mayor's office offices, which generated rejection among local citizens who wanted to use the space for sports and cultural activities. In response to these demands, the current government decided to ask the population about the use they would prefer for the building.
Additionally, it was confirmed that a universal access card will be provided so that young people can enjoy the premises on days without scheduled activities. Mercado emphasized that this process of citizen participation is the beginning of a new way of managing public spaces and reconciling with the community.
The next stage of the project will involve the dissemination of each voted option and the final vote that will take place on December 7. Mercado highlighted the importance of neighbors getting involved in decision-making regarding the use of public spaces and expressed his desire to promote open and participatory management in the local administration.
