Chamber of Deputies Approves Federal Government Reform

The Chamber of Deputies of Mexico approved reforms to create three new Secretariats of State, including the Secretariat of Women and the Anti-Corruption Secretariat, despite criticism from the opposition.

Chamber of Deputies Approves Federal Government Reform

The reform initiative proposed by President Claudia Sheinbaum, which modifies the structure of the federal government, was approved by the full Chamber of Deputies. This ruling includes the creation of three new Secretaries of State. One of them will transform the National Council of Humanities, Sciences, and Technologies into the Ministry of Science, Humanities, Technology, and Innovation; while the Institute for Women will become the Ministry for Women.

Additionally, changes such as renaming the Ministry of Public Administration to the Ministry of Anticorruption and Good Governance are proposed, which generated criticism from opposition deputies who believe that the government could have a conflict of interest in combating corruption. They argue that this does not guarantee transparency in the federal public administration.

The proposal also anticipates the creation of the Agency for Digital Transformation and Telecommunications, aimed at simplifying bureaucratic procedures and enhancing digital connectivity. This agency would have the rank of a Secretary of State.

Moreover, various regulatory adjustments and powers in several ministries such as Finance, Interior, Foreign Relations, Security and Citizen Protection, Environment, Agriculture, Infrastructure and Communications, Health, Energy, Economy, Agrarian Development, Culture, Tourism, and Education are contemplated. With these changes, the structure of the federal government increases from 19 to 22 Secretaries of State. The ruling was sent to the Senate for discussion and voting.

In separate votes, the creation of the Ministry for Women, the Agency for Digital Transformation and Telecommunications, as well as the new powers for the ministries of Security, Environment, Agriculture, and Science, were unanimously approved with both votes for and against.
