Mexico prepares for the election of new judges and magistrates, with 5,379 candidates vying for 881 positions in the judicial system by June 2025.


New Discipline Court Candidates Announced

The new Disciplinary Tribunal will have 45 candidates for five vacancies. The registration process for these candidacies ends on Sunday, November 24 at 11:59 PM. Some of the requirements to participate include having a Llave MX account, presenting a birth certificate or Mexican nationality document, a valid INE ID, a bachelor's degree in Law, a professional license, academic history, proof of residence, an essay of no more than three pages explaining the reasons for the application, and five reference letters supporting the candidate's suitability.

Additionally, 464 Circuit judges and 386 District judges will be appointed. The election, based on the reform of the Judiciary, will involve the participation of up to 5,379 candidates, of which 881 will be elected for positions as judges and magistrates.

Each of the three branches of the Union is allowed to propose up to three candidates per vacancy. The Executive can nominate three candidates, the Senate two, and the Chamber of Deputies one, totaling three candidates from the Legislative Power and three from the Judicial Power for each position in the SCJN, the TEPJF, and the Judicial Disciplinary Tribunal.

In the vacancies of the SCJN, there will be up to 81 candidates, while the Superior Room of the TEPJF will have 18 candidates for two vacancies, and the 15 vacancies of the Regional Rooms of the TEPJF will receive 135 applicants.

The President of the Senate's Board of Directors, Gerardo Fernández Noraña, reported that as of November 14, 1,809 people have registered to participate in the extraordinary election of ministers, magistrates, and judges of the Judiciary of Mexico, scheduled for the first Sunday of June 2025.

In this election, votes will be cast to fill multiple positions, including five women and four men justices of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN); as well as three women and two men magistrates of the Judicial Disciplinary Tribunal.

Among the positions to be elected are also a woman and a man magistrate of the Superior Room of the Electoral Tribunal of the Judicial Power of the Federation (TEPJF), along with 10 women and five men magistrates for the regional courts of the Electoral Tribunal in Guadalajara, Monterrey, Xalapa, Mexico City, and Toluca.
