The owner of Club América, Emilio Azcárraga, revealed in a recent interview with the YouTuber Escorpión Dorado the estimated date for the reopening of the Estadio Azteca. He also shared details about the expected renovation of the Coloso de Santa Úrsula, which will be fundamental for the upcoming 2026 World Cup.
During the conversation, Escorpión Dorado mentioned the situation of Cruz Azul, a team that currently does not have its own stadium. "They have stadiums, not like those made of cement, just imagine," joked the YouTuber. Cruz Azul has moved venues in recent years, first playing at the Estadio Ciudad de los Deportes and now at the Estadio Olímpico Universitario.
Emilio Azcárraga confirmed that the renovations of the Estadio Azteca will conclude by the end of 2025 or the beginning of 2026, positioning it as one of the most modern and functional venues in the country, just in time for the 2026 World Cup. Regarding the renovation, Azcárraga highlighted the importance of Estadio Azteca, not only for América but for Mexican football in general.
The executive expressed: "We are very happy with what’s coming, the stadium will be ready to welcome the best teams in the world. It is a project that represents a great effort and commitment to Mexican football." This modernization is crucial for both the club and the city, as it hosts the national teams and holds an emblematic significance in elite football.
Regarding the controversy sparked by América's lineup in their first match of the Clausura 2025 against Tijuana, Emilio Azcárraga defended the decision to give opportunities to young players. In response to received criticisms, the executive emphasized: "It was not a lack of respect, it was a show of confidence towards the boys and reflects the serious work being done at the club." Showing his support for the young players, he clarified his position stating that each one is responsible for their team and that they constantly seek to provide them with new opportunities.
