The FIA has been questioned by drivers such as Fernando Alonso and Sergio 'Checo' Pérez regarding the penalties imposed for certain maneuvers during races. The governing body indicated that the stewards will maintain discretion in applying penalties, especially considering mitigating or aggravating circumstances.
"The goal of this new appendix is to provide a clear guideline to the stewards regarding penalties for violations of specific articles (international sporting code)," stated the FIA. With this more structured framework, they aim to ensure a uniform and transparent application of sanctions, benefiting both the stewards and the drivers and competitors.
The new Formula 1 rules raise the possibility of suspensions or loss of championship points for expressing obscenities or making political statements. These measures could generate controversy with the drivers, as last year Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc received penalties for inappropriate expressions in press conferences.
The penalties announced by the FIA apply to behaviors deemed as "misconduct," which include offensive language, physical aggression, or acts perceived as harmful to the FIA and motorsport in general. Punishments are also established for political, religious, or personal statements that transgress the neutrality promoted by the FIA.
These regulatory changes have arisen despite the existence of the Grand Prix Drivers' Association (GPDA), formed by drivers from the grid, in an attempt to avoid sanctions like those imposed on Verstappen before the 2024 Singapore Grand Prix. The FIA seeks to improve transparency and consistency in decision-making with these measures.
Penalties and fines for Formula 1 drivers start at 40,000 euros for the first offense, reaching up to 120,000 euros and loss of championship points in case of recidivism. Additionally, in cases of inappropriate political, religious, or personal statements, a public apology and repudiation of the comments will be required.
The FIA compared these measures to fines imposed by other sports organizations, such as FIFA and the NFL, with the aim of safeguarding the integrity of the sport.
