Crisis in Mexican Swimming Federation Requires Resolution

World Aquatics has decided to disavow the Mexican Swimming Federation and has initiated an independent investigation process. Rommel Pacheco, Olympic diver and head of the National Commission for Physical Culture and Sports (Conade), is working to resolve the crisis between both parties, one of the inherited problems from the previous management of Ana Gabriela Guevara. It is expected that in April the Mexican Swimming Federation will elect a new president.

The conflict arose when Kiril Todorov, former president of the FMN, was linked to a embezzlement case in September 2021. In response to this situation, World Aquatics disavowed Todorov and established a Stabilization Committee for the Mexican Swimming Federation, which was not recognized by Ana Guevara. During this period, many swimmers and divers lost their support, leading them to undertake a series of amparo and measures to obtain additional resources.

Rommel Pacheco has mentioned that work is underway to create a new Mexican Swimming Federation, in collaboration with the Mexican Olympic Committee and Conade. The goal is that, for the first time in the country's history, athletes will have a voice and vote in the election of the Federation president. The aim is for the athlete to evaluate the management of the president and decide whether to remain in office at the end of their term.

It is anticipated that the new president of the Mexican Swimming Federation will be elected in April, and work is being done on drafting the statutes, taking into account the Constitution, as well as the General Law of Physical Culture and Sports. According to Pacheco, Conade considers the federations as allies, but their main focus is the well-being of the athlete, as resources are allocated from Conade to the federations and from these to the athletes.
