Estadio Azteca has been subject to an important designation that has brought with it the need to temporarily close its doors to carry out a renovation. Images of the interior of the venue published on social media on Saturday, February 15, showed the progress of the ongoing works.
The playing field has been completely removed, leaving only dirt in the center and a large hole in one of the lateral areas at midfield. In the stands, half of the seats have been removed, leaving only the concrete steps where the seats were previously located, completely changing the appearance of the stadium.
The images have shown the machinery used in the construction work, including trucks, cranes, and piles of material. Among the agreed renovations for the venue are the relocation of the dressing rooms to the center of the field, an increase in the number of available seats that will now be retractable to increase capacity, and the creation of new boxes in the lower area.
In addition, there are plans to install large screens outside to beautify the main facade of the Coloso de Santa Úrsula in its square. With an eye on the World Cup, one of the most anticipated sporting events for fans, Estadio Azteca aims to be ready for its presentation 481 days before its start. As part of the joint World Cup in three countries, the stadium has been designated as the venue for the opening ceremony, aiming to become a World Cup venue for the third time.
