The Tigres UANL Club announced on March 3 the immediate departure of Veljko Paunovic as head coach, preventing him from finishing the 2025 Clausura tournament of Liga MX, which still has seven matches to be played. Paunovic failed to connect with both the players and the fans, which generated criticism.
"The Tigres Club informs that after conducting a detailed analysis, it has made the decision to conclude the professional cycle of Veljko Paunovic as head coach of the team," stated the institution in a press release, thanking him for the professionalism and commitment shown. Despite achieving good numbers with the club, he did not win any titles.
Amid uncertainty, the possibility has begun to be discussed that Guido Pizarro, the current player of the Tigres, takes on the role of coach or announces his retirement at 35 years old to focus on this new challenge. The Tigres, currently third in the overall table, will face Cincinnati in the first leg of the round of 16 of the Concachampions this Tuesday.
Paunovic's departure comes after the 2-1 victory over Necaxa, which kept the Tigres in third place in the overall standings with 19 points, accumulating six wins, one draw, and three losses in ten matches of the 2025 Clausura. Despite managing 36 matches and obtaining 20 victories, the Serbian did not achieve any title during his management with the team from Monterrey.
