After achieving the two-time championship in the Clausura 2004 and Apertura 2004 tournaments, something historic in Liga MX, Hugo Sánchez faced a complicated scenario at Pumas. Despite the titles obtained, the coach was dismissed after the following tournament and declared that he felt the players sought his departure.
In a comparison with the recent situation of Veljko Paunovic at Tigres, Sánchez mentioned that, before being fired, the team was aiming for a third championship following his directives, achieving good results. Despite remaining as the coach in the Clausura 2005, the Pumas could not repeat the success and finished in 16th place in the standings.
The recognition obtained from the two-time championship allowed Hugo Sánchez to continue at the helm of the university team in Apertura 2005. However, after a series of poor results, he was dismissed after matchday 14. His successor, Miguel España, also failed to correct the team's course, which again finished in 16th place in the standings with 16 points.
During an appearance on the Futbol Picante program, Sánchez expressed his feelings about his departure from Pumas: "They set me up, indirectly." He stated that the lack of adherence to his directives caused a break in the hierarchy of the team and affected his performance on the bench.
