Sergio 'Checo' Pérez's father, Antonio Pérez Garibay, shared details about a possible return of his son to Formula 1, ensuring that he would only do so if it were with a team that could give him the opportunity to be a champion. Antonio expressed that Sergio has received proposals this year, but they were not ambitious enough for him, as he longs to fight for the championship.
In an interview with Fox Sports Mexico, Antonio Pérez Garibay stated: 'Sergio is eager to return only to be a champion, that’s the only thing missing. He would have no reason to return to Formula 1 if it is not to become the world champion; he is the world runner-up, something we have never had in Mexico.'
Graem Lawson, director of the new F1 team, Cadillac, mentioned that they are evaluating several options to choose the drivers for the team, looking not only for skill and on-track experience but also considering future potential. Although Sergio Pérez is one of the candidates being considered, there is still no confirmation if he will be selected as one of the main drivers for the 2026 season.
In addition to Pérez, Cadillac is also eyeing Guanyu Zhou, former driver for Kick Sauber, whom Lawson praised for his performance and work in challenging circumstances. Another option being considered is Colton Herta, an IndyCar driver, although he currently does not have the necessary points on his superlicense to participate in F1.
Pérez's experience in Formula 1 is an aspect that the team values, along with the abilities of other drivers on their list of potential candidates. Lawson emphasized the importance of experience when evaluating drivers and the need to meet the requirements necessary to compete in the highest category of motorsport.
