Mexico Faces Pressure After Nations League Disappointment

Mexico's national football team has faced significant challenges after disappointing results in the Nations League, leading to the firing of several coaches. With the 2026 World Cup on the horizon, pressure mounts for new coach Jaime Lozano to achieve success.

Mexico Faces Pressure After Nations League Disappointment

The Mexican National Team has experienced a series of ups and downs in recent tournaments of the Concacaf Nations League. In the 2022-2023 edition, Argentine Diego Cocca was in charge, who managed to advance past the group stage but suffered a humiliating loss in the semifinals against the United States (0-3). The U.S. team crowned itself Champion, which led to Cocca's dismissal after coaching only seven matches. Jaime Lozano then became the interim coach and managed to win the 2023 Gold Cup against alternate teams from the United States and Canada.

Confirmed in his position, Lozano faced the 2023-2024 Nations League, with a new format in which Mexico started in the quarterfinals. Despite advancing past this stage, in the semifinals, they faced the United States once again and were defeated by a narrow margin (2-3), leaving Mexico in second place. This new disappointing result in the Nations League increased the pressure on Javier Aguirre, even though his focus is on the 2026 World Cup.

In the first edition of the Nations League, in 2019-2020, Gerardo Martino faced difficulties but managed to advance to the next round. However, problems in later stages of the tournament led to complicated situations for coaches and the dismissal of several of them. Although the competition seeks to provide more competitive matches to improve the level of the national teams in the region, Mexico has faced obstacles in achieving the title.
