The Mexican synchronized diving pair, consisting of Olympic silver medalists Osmar Olvera and Juan Celaya, was relegated to eighth place in the final of the competition due to a zero in the qualification of their last dive. After accumulating 332.40 points in the previous five rounds, they were close to winning a medal, but an administrative error prevented them from continuing the fight for the podium at the Super Final in Beijing, China.
In the final round, Olvera and Celaya had planned to execute their signature dive, the 5156B, of high difficulty, which would allow them to compete for a medal. However, instead of this dive, the 5152B, a simpler variation, was officially recorded. The World Aquatics regulations state that executing a dive different from the announced one results in a score of zero, sealing the fate of the Mexican divers.
After an investigation, it was discovered that an error in transcribing the list of dives into the competition's electronic system was the cause of the confusion. Although there was an attempt to correct the erroneous record before Olvera and Celaya performed their dive, the claim came too late.
Although the error at the Super Final in Beijing was a setback for the Mexican pair, their participation is part of the preparation for the World Aquatics Championships in Singapore, which will take place in August. The president of the Mexican Diving Federation, Fernando Platas, emphasized that there were opportunities to correct the error and lamented the situation that occurred at the competition.
